Big Reaction from Turkish Jewish Community in regards with news reports about newly appointed Israeli Consul in Istanbul

Management Board of Turkish Jewish Community reacted fiercely to the claims and news reports in Turkish and international media implying an alleged conflict between Turkish Jews and the recently appointed Israeli Consul in Istanbul, Yossi Levi Sfari.

Last week, in Israeli media there were claims that Turkish Jewish Community reacted to the appointment of the new Israeli Consul in Istanbul who was appointed last October and that the reaction was due to his sexual orientation.

In the news, it was claimed that the community failed to invite Sfari to community events and did not invite him to synagogue to read the Torah as was customary with former Israeli consuls.

In the following days, Turkish Jewish Community reacted to the news covered in Turkish media outlets claiming that as a reaction to “Sfari being ostracized”, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs severed all communications with Turkish Jewish Community.

Turkish Jewish Community posted a response to all these claims on its social media accounts:

“The Consul General will receive the same utmost respect from our community and management board as his predecessors had received in the past.

News such as these with the sole aim to create a stir should be disregarded.”
