A First for Turkish Jewish Community
Deputy Chairman of Turkey’s Chief Rabbinate Foundation Moris Levi was recently elected as the “Representative of Community Foundations” at General Directorate of Foundations’ highest ranked decision-making body ‘Foundations Council’. Levi took office, last week.The Representative of Community (Minority) Foundations is elected to represent 167 community foundations, in Turkey. For this post, seven minority communities in Turkey including Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Assyrian, Chaldean, Bulgarian and Georgians designated a joint candidate based on the number of foundations. This year a candidate from the Jewish Community was designated for the post.
Moris Levi got 117 votes out of 121 at the elections held in Ankara, on December 24th, 2017 and became the Representative for a two-year term.
Moris Levi went to Ankara to attend his first Foundations Council meeting on January 15th. At the handover ceremony, he took over his new post from Prof. Dr. Toros Alcan.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Alcan thanked everyone who supported him during his term. A photo of Jerusalem taken by award-winning photographer Izzet Keribar was presented to Alcan as a gift.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Levi, stated that he is excited for his new post. He said that seeing the support and companionship in the eyes of the colleagues he’ll work with made him less nervous.
