Turkish Jewish Community lost one of its philanthropists: Rafael Torel (1915-2016)

Known for his contributions to the community in almost every field, Rafael Torel, Honorary Advisor to Chief Rabbinate, a philanthropist who not only had an open mind, but also an open heart, passed away at the age of 101. Torel’s funeral was held at Ulus Jewish Cemetery on April 20.

Born in 1915, Rafael Torel was admired for his tenacity and diligence for most of his life. These qualities put Rafael Torel in charge of a factory with 3000 workers when he was only 20 years old. After a major fire, Torel’s factory was burnt to ground. Torel not succumbing to this catastrophe, founded Derby (shaving supplies manufacturer). In 1962, he became the Chairman of Or-Ahayim Hospital. In 2005, he helped open ‘Allegra Torel Geriatric Ward’ within the hospital facilities. In 2007, his autobiography “Miracles are Possible” was published by Gozlem Publishing.
