From the Museum of Turkish Jews: ´Tallit Bag´
The ´Tallit Bag´, selected from the Quincentenial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews collection...One of the most important religious objects in the Judaic lifestyle is Tallit. Tallit - the prayer shawl, which is used by the Jewish men traditionally while praying, is kept in a 'Tallit bag'. Tallit and therefore this bag is used by a Jewish man starting at his bar mitzvah, whenever he prays. Many men have their initials embroidered on the tallit bag.
The 'Tallit bag' shown in the picture and placed in the museum inventory is dated 1883. On its front, the ten commandments, and on its backside the words "Yosef Hayim Allevi, Prayed to God and God accepted" are embroidered. Floral patterns have also been embroidered on the purple velvet fabric.
The 'Tallit bag' bequeathed to Berty Kant by Dr. Yuda Levi was then donated to the museum by Rabbi Isak Haleva. It can be seen in the midrash section of the Quincentenial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews.
