Museum of Turkish Jews was Introduced in Shanghai
The Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews was introduced in the Baluoho Center located in the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum.The exhibition titled 'The Jewish Museums in the World' brought together some of the most prestigious and inventive museums dedicated to Jewish culture, history, and art, with the Chinese audience, at the beginning of this month.
Our museum was one of the museums chosen among 20 cities and countries such as Switzerland, Brazil, Denmark, Prague, Sydney, Toledo, Vienna, and Alaska. The Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews has been introduced with many aspects including its historical background, permanent exhibition, and activities.
Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum (SJRM) was established in 2007, in the Ohel Moshe Synagogue located in the historical neighborhood of the Hongkou District where more than 20,000 Jewish refugees had lived during World War II. When first established, SJRM was occupying an area of 900 m2. In 2020 the Ohel Moshe Synagogue went through an expansion and renovation process where it became a two-building complex of 4500 m2, also including the Names Wall, the wall on which the names of more than 19,000 of the Jewish Refugees who had lived in Shanghai during World War II are inscribed. Since it was established, the museum has been actively collecting historical materials and conducting academic research.
