Netanyahu and Abbas will be in Turkey Next Week
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is planning to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas separately in Ankara next week.According to the written statement by the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye Directorate of Communications, Abbas will be in Turkey on July 25th and Netanyahu on July 28th.
During the visit that will be Netanyahu's first premiership visit to Turkey, the renewed diplomatic relations between the two countries, regional and international issues will be discussed.
Ankara had yet to host an Israeli Prime Minister since Ehud Olmert's visit in 2008.
There has been a reconciliation between Turkey and Israel since 2022. Israeli President Isaac Herzog visited Turkey in March 2022 to meet with President Erdoğan. Then in June Israel and Turkey declared that diplomatic relations were restored including the exchange of ambassadors. Israel reinstated an ambassador to Turkey in September 2022.
After the earthquakes in Turkey on February 6th, Israel, along with the recently normalizing relations, sent search and rescue teams and help, besides establishing a field hospital.
Also following the earthquakes, the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Eli Cohen visited Turkey conveying the message "Israel stands with Turkey".
