The "Ottoman and Turkish Ketubbot" Exhibition
The Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews is opening an exhibition of Ketubbot (Jewish wedding contracts), some from forgotten corners of our homes, some as already discovered works of art, some from the walls of the collectors, some from the Chief Rabbinate Collection, on November 7th, at Schneidertempel Arts Center, after they have been cleaned and maintained.The Museum of Turkish Jews will be exhibiting around 50 Ketubbot brought together from various individual collections, including those of the Chief Rabbi of the Republic of Turkey Rabbi Isak Haleva and collectors Ceri Benardete, Jak Haim, and Silvyo Ovadya, collected since 1830 to this day, from various cities of Turkey such as Van, Izmir, Istanbul, Bursa Edirne, Tekirdağ and the archives of The Israel Museum.
The "Ottoman and Turkish Ketubbot" Exhibition will initially be exhibited at the Schneidertempel Arts Center from November 8th until November 17th. It will later continue to be exhibited at the Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews between November 20th and February 20th, 2025.
Besides the Sephardic Ketubbot which constitute most of the exhibition, there will also be some Ketubbot from the Ashkenazi Community, some from the Karaite Jewish community brought from Crimea, and one Ketubbah of Iranian origin.
