New Exhibition from the Museum of the Princes´ Islands

A new photography exhibition of the Museum of the Princes' Islands is opened at the Historical Ferry Pier in Büyükada. The exhibition opened in cooperation with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), IBB Heritage, and IBB Culture, is focusing on the mid-20th century, the years when change began in the Princes' Islands as well as Istanbul, with photographs from the Yaman Alkan Collection.

The Princes' Islands gained prominence as Istanbul's summer resort and a tourist attraction close to the city. The summer houses and hotels, most of which still exist today, formed the discernible face of the Islands. Although some of them changed their function after the second half of the 20th century, the face of the Islands did not exactly change until the last quarter of the century. Bodrum, Marmaris, and even Antalya had not yet been discovered as summer resorts back in those years. The Princes' Islands were a favorite for the wealthy. This was the period when seasonal journeys to and fro took place between Istanbul and the Islands.

Yaman Alkan, a collectioner living in Burgazada, has worked nonstop for the last five years, to compile the visual archive of Burgazada. The photographs and the visual materials in the exhibition present a selection from his archive.

The exhibition will stay open for visitors all through the year 2025.
