"Lead With Love, Compassion, and Kindness" - Interview with Chaim B. Rubenstein
By Bessy ADUT
Chaim was born in Los Angeles, CA and grew up in Israel. At age 22, Chaim moved back to the U.S. to be closer to family. He worked in Los Angeles in the entertainment industry before moving to the East Coast to pursue a career in music, playing multiple instruments, writing and performing rock 'n roll bands throughout two decades. In addition, he taught himself to record. It was during this time that he fell in love with the art of engineering and mixing audio, at first recording his own music and later producing and engineering for other artists. In 2017, he transitioned into the film industry working as both a Production Sound Mixer on set as well as Audio Post Production for film and TV which he continues to this day. As an audio post engineer, he has done sound design, dialogue editing, a bit of composing and re-record mixing. Projects he’s worked on include Documentaries, DocuSeries, Commercials, Scripted Narratives (both shorts and features), and even some news. His guiding principle is “Story first”. Now based in Los Angeles, he continues to passionately do his part to tell the story as best he can.
Where are you located?
Los Angeles, CA
What are your current projects?
A few credits over the last year are: The Jester (feature horror film), Ghost Game (feature horror film), Stinky Summer (feature family comedy), Afterlife of Objects (documentary feature), Mr. Sunshine (short film), Dooba Dooba (feature film). Currently working on the audio post of a short film called Foxhole.
Please share how you got started and got to where you are today...
I started as a musician. Writing, performing in Rock 'n Roll bands. Early on I was fascinated by the art of recording and mixing so I started doing that as well. Eventually, I started recording and producing other artists. I transitioned to Film & TV in 2017 and now record on set as well as doing Audio Post Production. I’ve done sound design, dialogue editing, and final mixes.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all; but as they say it’s not about the destination but about the road that led you there. I try to enjoy the ride through the ups and downs.
Tell us more about your life and career...
I was born in LA but grew up in Israel. I moved back to the U.S. in my early 20s and have been here ever since. I’m a musician first and foremost, as an artist I bring that sensitivity to the world and everything that I do both in my personal and professional life.
What do you think goodness is?
Leading with compassion. Seeing yourself in others and being kind. I believe that people are inherently good and that we have more in common than what divides us and I lean into that every day.
Who are you outside of your professional life?
I still play music for fun. I love cooking and the outdoors. I try to take full advantage of LA hiking, going to music shows, art galleries, the theater, and movies of course :)
Are you interested in environmental issues?
Yes. I follow Environment America, the Nature Conservancy, and others.
Do you think the world is not a good place right now?
It’s hard to tell. There are certainly some alarming trends right now but in the long arc of history the world is actually more connected and people’s lives are better than they’ve ever been.
How do you make the world a better place?
By leading with love, compassion, and kindness.
How can we all make the world better?
One act at a time, one kindness at a time every single day. I believe that keeping the conversation going is the most important thing. If we’re only speaking (or thinking) to our own echo chamber then we lose the ability to find common ground and move the world forward towards love and equality.
How can science and spirituality coexist?
One could argue that science is a leap of faith until the facts are proven and explained. In that regard, it is similar to spirituality.
If you could go anywhere, where would you go (and why)?
Spain! I’ve never been and it’s on my bucket list.
