Movie Review: A Minecraft Movie

Movie Review: A Minecraft Movie

By Bessy ADUT

There is a lot of troublesome news in the world right now, be it politics or economics. At times like this, we all need a little escape from harsh realities to have some fun. That’s why A MineCraft Movie was a great distraction and entertainment.

I wasn’t familiar with the game it was based on, but I heard that the players loved the movie just as the audience in general. I have read in the reviews that they took it as a heartfelt, breathtaking, emotionally rich, and wild entertainment adventure. This fantasy, adventure, and comedy film resembles the movies of the 90s.

The film was directed by Jared Hass. It has a great cast ensemble with Jason Moma, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen. We get pulled with four misfits through a portal into this cubic world and go on a quest.

In terms of box office achievement, this is the second-highest-grossing film of 2025 and the video game film of all time. A sequel is already in the works.

Our protagonist Steve, a struggling doorknob Salesman, somehow manages to break into a mine to fulfill a childhood dream. He creates himself a paradise and yet gets captured by the hellish world called Nether where creativity is discouraged.

Meanwhile, we get introduced to our second character, the video game champion ‘the garbage man’.

Afterwards, we are introduced to Henry and Natalie moving to Chuglass after their parents' passing. We see Natalie as a big sister also playing the role of a brother for his brother Henry who struggles at school, having a hard time fitting in.

A Minecraft Movie Cast

Four characters get together to go on a quest and adventure. They get sucked into the Overworld. Henry fights off monsters and learns ways to manipulate blocks of matters and builds a wooden fortress. They each get a particular task and start their quest. Garrett is interested in the hoard of diamonds by Steve. After many more adventures, and battles, they complete their quest with success.

Henry uses the Ender Pearl to obtain the Crystal that restores the sunlight and it causes Malgosha and her army to zombify, so that they are no longer a threat. The group, who survived the explosion, get back to Cuglass, and they develop a successful video game called “Block City Battle Buddies.” Dawn opens her zoo with Dennis as an attraction, Natalie teaches self-defense classes, Henry completes his science project jetpack, and Garrett refreshes the game store together with Steve.

We have a happy ending after a lot of adventures and difficulties. There are many funny moments performed really well by Jack Black and Jason Momoa. I believe it did so good at the box office, not only because of the game’s fans, but people really do need laughter, as I mentioned at the beginning of my article. It is also nice to see a cast ensemble with older and younger generations working on a mission together.

Something else personally got my attention during the introductions of adult characters. Almost every character mentioned that they were financially struggling and having to multitask several jobs. One of them is a mobile zoo, and real estate agent. That brought a burst of laughter with deep, concerning thoughts. Even in a fantasy, fun movie, I have noticed characters' dialogue talking about a financial struggle and having to multitask several jobs, just like in real life. This also came to my attention during the Academy Award speeches this year. Even the award-winning Directors and Producers going on stage were talking about some financial difficulties in their careers which comes to show that economic troubles in the world are really affecting everyone, even entering into our most escapist, fun movies.

And yet, there is also a powerful, encouraging message here. If every character does their part and together they work towards a goal, many obstacles are possible to come over.

As of April 18, 2025, A Minecraft Movie has grossed $319.3 million in the United States and Canada, and $343.2 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $720.8 million.

I heard there was a “Chicken jokey” TikTok trend that helped with the popularity of the movie however, it really bothered the audience and the theater management. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, such an interactive experience could be what makes watching a movie in crowds fun again however, it can also be very distracting and annoying for some people. I guess it would be nice if these viewings could be optional for people who would like to have an unbothered viewing experience and some who would love some interaction such as the Rocky Horror Picture phenomenon.

A Minecraft Movie

To summarize, I recommend this movie as a good family movie for sure, especially if you have kids or if you are an adult with your inner child still kicking. There is a lot of creativity and humor to celebrate. We all need a good popcorn movie sometimes. Going on adventures through these characters helps us get away from our daily life troubles. It also prepares us to battle our own monsters in life. I praise the performances of the cast ensemble. They all did a nice job individually as well as a group.

Even though, I was not a fan of the game, hearing the adaptation was made making sure that the objects present in the film were faithful to the game, made up only of cubes including everything from the trees to the fruits, is pleasing. Success is always hidden in the little details, coming together to form a big picture. I personally went to see the movie because I have been a fan of Jack Black and his humor. I was happy to see a little bit of his musical performance as well. I recommend this movie, if you are looking for some screening time.
